Roman Urdu to Urdu Converter
Roman Urdu → Urdu Script Converter
Type or paste Roman Urdu below. Words convert as you type (on space) and on Convert. Then copy, download or edit the Urdu output directly. You can also type with the visual keyboard below — each key shows the English letter on top and the Urdu letter it gives below in red.
How it works: common words use a built-in dictionary first (mera=میرا, urdu=اردو, pakistan=پاکستان, kitab=کتاب, naam=نام, ahmed=احمد, hai=ہے, aap=آپ, kaise=کیسے, hain=ہیں). Other words convert by sound: aa=آ, ee=ی, oo=و, kh=خ, gh=غ, ch=چ, sh=ش, bh=بھ, ph=پھ, th=تھ, dh=دھ, jh=جھ; capitals choose a different letter (T=ٹ, H=ح, D=ڈ, R=ڑ, Z=ذ, S=ص, N=ں, A=ع, C=ث, J=ض, Q=ظ). Short a/i/u inside a word are not written — type long vowels (aa/ee/oo) for long sounds. In “Direct Urdu” keyboard mode, clicking a key types the Urdu letter straight into the Urdu box, without conversion.
Honest limit: Transliteration converts sounds, not meaning. Check names, poetry words and uncommon spellings before sending. Words with z can be ز, ذ, ض or ظ depending on the word — known ones are in the dictionary (zaroor=ضرور, zameen=زمین, zaahir=ظاہر, zara=ذرا); unknown z-words default to ز, so check them.
This free roman urdu to urdu converter turns Roman Urdu typed in English letters into Urdu script, right in your browser, with no signup and no software to install. It is transliteration, not translation: it changes the script of the words you type, but it does not change their meaning or choose different words for you. So type the words you mean, check the Urdu output, and only then send or publish it.

How to Use the Roman Urdu to Urdu Converter
Using the converter takes only a few seconds. Type or paste your Roman Urdu in the top box, then let it convert as you type: words convert when you press space, and you can also press Convert to Urdu at any time to convert the whole text at once. Read the Urdu output in the lower box, and if a word looks wrong, simply click in that output box and fix it yourself — it is fully editable.
- Type or paste Roman Urdu in the first box, for example mera naam Ahmed hai.
- Press Convert to Urdu, or just keep typing — a word converts when you add a space after it.
- Edit the Urdu output directly if a name or an uncommon word needs a different letter.
- Press Copy Urdu Text to copy the result, Download .txt to save it as a plain text file, or Clear to start again with both boxes empty.
How the Dictionary and Sound Rules Work
The converter checks a built-in dictionary of common words first, and only then falls back to sound rules. That order matters, because it is what keeps everyday words in their usual Urdu spelling. The dictionary includes mera=میرا, urdu=اردو, pakistan=پاکستان, kitab=کتاب, naam=نام, ahmed=احمد, hai=ہے, aap=آپ, kaise=کیسے, hain=ہیں, zaroor=ضرور, zameen=زمین, zaahir=ظاہر and zara=ذرا.
For words that are not in the dictionary, the tool converts by sound. Long vowels are aa=آ, ee=ی and oo=و, while short a, i and u inside a word are not written — so type a long vowel when you mean a long sound. Digraphs are kh=خ, gh=غ, ch=چ, sh=ش, bh=بھ, ph=پھ, th=تھ, dh=دھ and jh=جھ. Capital letters choose a different Urdu letter: T=ٹ, H=ح, D=ڈ, R=ڑ, Z=ذ, S=ص, N=ں, A=ع, C=ث, J=ض and Q=ظ.
This is different from typing letter by letter on the Online Urdu Keyboard, where each key stands for one Urdu letter. Here you type ordinary Roman spelling and the tool works out the Urdu script for you.
Worked Examples
Try these examples in the tool above and compare your result with the Urdu shown here:
- mera naam Ahmed hai becomes میرا نام احمد ہے.
- aap kaise hain becomes آپ کیسے ہیں.
- kitab becomes کتاب, because the dictionary is checked before the sound rules.
If your sentence uses a name or a word the dictionary does not know, read it back before you copy it. A small edit in the output box is often all that is needed.
Where You Can Paste Your Urdu Text
The output is standard Unicode Urdu, so it pastes cleanly into most modern apps. Use it for messages in WhatsApp, for documents in Word, for layouts in InPage, and for designs in PixelLab and Canva. If you need InPage formatting, first convert the copied Unicode text with the Unicode → InPage Converter; to bring InPage text back to Unicode, use the InPage → Unicode Converter.
For a polished look, try your copied text first in the Live Urdu Font Previews tool, where you can see the same words in many fonts before you settle on one. A reliable starting point for reading and everyday writing is Jameel Noori Nastaleeq.
Honest Limits of This Converter
This converter changes sounds into script; it does not understand meaning. It cannot tell which meaning you intend when the same Roman spelling could stand for more than one Urdu word, and it does not check spelling or grammar. Words with z are a good example: z can be ز, ذ, ض or ظ depending on the word, known words are in the dictionary, but unknown z-words default to ز, so always check them.
Check names, poetry words and uncommon spellings before sending, because those are the words most likely to need a correction. The editable output box is there for exactly that reason — fix the word once, then copy or download the corrected text.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Is it free?
Yes. This roman urdu to urdu converter is free to use in your browser, with no signup and no software to buy. Just open this page and start typing.
Is it translation or transliteration?
It is transliteration, not translation. It changes Roman Urdu into Urdu script without changing the meaning of the words. If you type a Roman Urdu sentence, you get the same sentence written in Urdu script.
Why does “kitab” give کتاب here but کیتاب on the phonetic keyboard?
Because the two tools work differently. This converter checks a dictionary first, so kitab gives the usual spelling کتاب. On the phonetic keyboard, each key gives one letter, so i always means ی and kitab becomes کیتاب. Use this converter when you want ordinary Roman spelling turned into Urdu script.
What if a word converts wrong?
Fix it in the editable Urdu output box before you copy or download. Check names, poetry words, uncommon spellings and z-words first, and try long vowels (aa, ee, oo) or a capital letter if a sound needs a different Urdu letter.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The converter runs in a mobile browser, just as it does on a computer. Type or paste Roman Urdu, convert it, then copy the result into WhatsApp or any other app.
Can I edit the output?
Yes. The Urdu output box is editable and set right-to-left. Click in it, correct any word, and your edits stay there until you press Clear or convert again.
Can I download my text?
Yes. Press Download .txt under the input box to save your Urdu text as a plain text file called urdu-text.txt, which is handy for keeping a draft or sending it elsewhere.
