Online Urdu Keyboard
Online Urdu Keyboard — Type Urdu in Your Browser
Click the on-screen keys, or type with your physical keyboard using the same map. Each key shows the English letter on top and the Urdu letter it types below in red — so you can see at a glance which button gives which letter. This is a phonetic key map, not Roman transliteration: type the keys for the Urdu letters themselves — for example, type “ktab” for کتاب, “mira” for میرا, “ardw” for اردو, “pakstan” for پاکستان. If you want to type Roman spelling like “kitab” and get Urdu script, use the Roman Urdu → Urdu Script Converter.
Phonetic map (physical keyboard): a=ا b=ب c=چ d=د e=ع f=ف g=گ h=ھ i=ی j=ج k=ک l=ل m=م n=ن o=ہ p=پ q=ق r=ر s=س t=ت u=ء v=ٹ w=و x=ش y=ے z=ز | Shift: A=آ S=ص D=ڈ R=ڑ Z=ژ G=غ K=خ H=ح O=ؤ U=ئ N=ں T=ٹ C=ث J=ض Q=ظ | Space, Backspace and punctuation work normally. Punctuation keys: ,=، .=۔ ?=؟ ;=؛
Honest limit: Output is standard Unicode Urdu — how it looks depends on the font in the app you paste into. This keyboard types letters; it does not check spelling.
This free online Urdu keyboard lets you type Urdu directly in your browser, with no software to install and no Urdu keyboard hardware to buy. Click the keys on screen, or use your own keyboard with the phonetic map in the tool. The result is standard Unicode Urdu text that you can copy and paste wherever you need it.

How to Use the Online Urdu Keyboard
Using the keyboard takes only a few seconds. First, click inside the large text box at the top of this page. Then choose the way of typing that suits you best.
- On-screen keys: click any QWERTY key below the text box — each key shows its English letter on top and the Urdu letter it types below in red — and it appears in the box straight away. This is the simplest option on a phone or tablet, and it also helps when you are not sure which physical key gives which letter. Use the Space key on screen to put a space between words.
- Physical keyboard: type the English letters that stand for the Urdu letters you want. For example, type ktab and you will see کتاب, type mira for میرا, type ardw for اردو, and type pakstan for پاکستان. Backspace works as usual, and you can move the cursor back into the text to correct a letter.
- Shift keys: hold Shift for the less common letters shown in the tool, such as Shift + A for آ and Shift + S for ص. The punctuation keys also change, so a full stop becomes ۔ and a question mark becomes ؟.
As you type, the counter beside the buttons updates at once, so you can see how many characters and words you have written before you copy the text.
Understanding the Phonetic Map
This is a phonetic key map, not Roman transliteration. That distinction matters. Each key stands for one Urdu letter, and you must type the keys for the letters themselves, not the Roman spelling of the whole word. In other words, think letter by letter, rather than writing the word as it sounds in Roman Urdu.
The lower-case map is: a=ا, b=ب, c=چ, d=د, e=ع, f=ف, g=گ, h=ھ, i=ی, j=ج, k=ک, l=ل, m=م, n=ن, o=ہ, p=پ, q=ق, r=ر, s=س, t=ت, u=ء, v=ٹ, w=و, x=ش, y=ے and z=ز. With Shift held down, the map changes to: A=آ, S=ص, D=ڈ, R=ڑ, Z=ژ, G=غ, K=خ, H=ح, O=ؤ, U=ئ, N=ں, T=ٹ, C=ث, J=ض and Q=ظ. For punctuation, use ,=،, .=۔, ?=؟ and ;=؛.
That is why ktab gives کتاب, while typing kitab would add an extra ی, because i always means ی in this map. If you prefer to type ordinary Roman spelling such as kitab and have it turned into Urdu script, that is a different kind of tool: the future Roman Urdu → Urdu Script Converter. This page does not try to guess Roman spellings, and that keeps its behaviour predictable, letter by letter.
Copying and Downloading Your Urdu Text
When your text is ready, you have three simple options under the text box. Press Copy Text to copy everything to your clipboard, then paste it with Ctrl + V on a computer or with the paste option on your phone. Press Download .txt to save the text as a plain text file called urdu-text.txt, which is handy for keeping a draft or sending it to someone else. Press Clear when you want to start again with an empty box.
The live counter is a small but useful check: if you paste a long passage into Word or another app and something seems to be missing, compare its length with the character and word count shown here first.
Where You Can Use Your Urdu Text
Because the output is standard Unicode Urdu, it pastes cleanly into most modern apps. Use it to write a document in Word, prepare text for InPage, design a post in PixelLab or Canva, or send a message on WhatsApp. In each app, choose an Urdu font that suits the design, because the font controls whether the text looks like flowing Nastaliq or a straighter Naskh style.
For a polished look, try your copied text first in the Live Urdu Font Previews tool, where you can see the same words in many fonts before you settle on one. A reliable starting point for everyday Urdu writing is Jameel Noori Nastaleeq, the classic Nastaliq font used for books, poetry and general reading.
Honest Limits of This Keyboard
It helps to know what this tool does not do. The output is standard Unicode Urdu, but its appearance depends on the font in the app you paste into, so the same text can look different in Word, InPage, PixelLab, Canva and WhatsApp. This keyboard types letters; it does not check spelling, correct grammar or suggest words. If a word looks wrong, read it back and fix the letters yourself. No software install is needed, and the tool runs in your browser, so it will not replace a full Urdu word processor or a spellchecker for long documents.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Is it free?
Yes. The online Urdu keyboard is free to use, with no signup and no software to buy. Just open this page, type, and copy your text.
Do I need to install anything?
No. The keyboard runs in your web browser on a computer or a phone. You do not need to install a keyboard app, a language pack or any other software to use it.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The tool works in a mobile browser, and the on-screen Urdu keys are especially useful on a phone, where you can tap each letter instead of relying on a physical keyboard.
Why does my text look different in another app?
The text itself does not change, but its appearance depends on the font in the app you paste into. Nastaliq fonts join and slant the letters in the traditional way, while Naskh fonts look straighter, so choose an Urdu font in that app if the first result is not the style you wanted.
Does it check spelling?
No. This keyboard types the letters you choose, letter by letter. It does not check spelling or grammar, so it is worth reading your text back before you publish or send it.
Can I download my text?
Yes. Press Download .txt under the text box to save your text as a plain text file called urdu-text.txt. You can also use Copy Text and paste it straight into another app.
What is the difference from a Roman Urdu converter?
This keyboard is a phonetic key map: each key gives one Urdu letter, so you type ktab for کتاب. A Roman Urdu converter works differently: it reads a whole Roman spelling, such as kitab, and converts that spelling into Urdu script. If you write in Roman spelling, look out for the future Roman Urdu → Urdu Script Converter; for letter-by-letter typing, use this keyboard.
