Honest notes: WPM counts words as typed characters divided by 5 (the standard typing-test rule), using correctly typed characters only. Accuracy is correct characters out of all characters you typed. This tool measures speed and accuracy — it does not teach typing, and it needs an Urdu keyboard (use the Online Urdu Keyboard on this site in another tab if you do not have one). Your typing is never uploaded or saved.

The Urdu Typing Test is a free, browser-based tool for measuring how fast and how accurately you can type in Urdu. Read the passage shown in the tool, type it exactly as it appears, and watch your speed and accuracy update live. Your typing stays in your browser and is never uploaded or saved.

How to Use the Urdu Typing Test

  • Pick a time first: 1, 2 or 3 minutes. The default is 2 minutes.
  • Read the Urdu passage shown at the top of the tool. If you want a different one, click New passage to cycle through the three built-in passages.
  • Click in the typing box and start typing the passage exactly as shown. The timer starts on your first keystroke, not when the page loads.
  • Watch the letters colour as you type: green for a correct letter and red for a wrong one. Your live WPM, accuracy, correct characters and wrong characters update below the box.
  • When the time ends, or when you finish the whole passage, your final result appears in the result box. Click Restart test to clear the box, reset the clock and try again.

If you do not have an Urdu keyboard, open the Online Urdu Keyboard in another tab and use it alongside this test. You can also draft and check longer Urdu text with the Urdu Word Counter before you practise typing it here.

How WPM and Accuracy Are Calculated

WPM stands for words per minute, using the standard typing-test rule. A word is counted as five characters, so WPM is your correctly typed characters divided by 5, divided by the minutes elapsed. Only correctly typed characters count towards WPM, so guessing quickly does not raise your score.

Accuracy is simpler: it is your correct characters divided by all the characters you typed, shown as a percentage. For example, if you type 100 characters and 90 match the passage, your accuracy is 90%. The live stats also show your correct and wrong character counts separately, so you can see whether speed or mistakes are holding you back.

Tips to Improve Your Urdu Typing

  • Put accuracy first, then speed. Slow down until most letters colour green, and only then try to type a little faster.
  • Practise for a short time every day rather than in one long session. A few focused 2-minute tests will help more than occasional marathon practice.
  • Read a few words ahead instead of typing letter by letter, and keep your eyes on the passage rather than on your hands where possible.
  • Repeat the same passage a second time and compare your result. A steadier, more accurate second attempt is real progress, even if the WPM rise is small.
  • Try different time lengths: use 1 minute for a quick check and 3 minutes to practise staying accurate when you tire.

Once you are comfortable with the passages here, you can make practice more enjoyable by typing your own favourite lines. Draft them with the Urdu Poetry Card Maker, add special characters with the Urdu Symbols Picker, or convert Roman Urdu first with the Roman Urdu to Urdu Converter. To see how the same wording looks in different typefaces, try the Live Urdu Font Previews tool.
